Cottagecore Kitchens: Are they practical?

You've seen them slowly creeping into your Pinterest feed. They're not new. You've always loved that cottage aesthetic. The all white and grey, cold marble look was never you. So you think you want to jump on to that old world bandwagon?

I know I'm late to this but I just recently have been able to identify my favorite style, or should I say lifestyle, which is "cottagecore". Finally I can put a name to my mission in life, the ultimate goal. If you're as ignorant as I was about the meaning of cottagecore, just imagine what life would've been like in 1910 in rural England. You live in a stone cottage, use a wood-burning stove to cook and keep warm. You garden, can your veggies, knit, make candles from beeswax (your bees), do needlework, forage. You get the picture.

It just so happens that this old world kitchen aesthetic was becoming more and more popular before cottagecore made its first appearance (2020). deVOL popularized and perfected the old world meets modern pairing. By modern I mean modern conveniences such as refrigeration, dishwashers, hot water.

First step to achieve the cottagecore kitchen aesthetic is to find a stove that looks like it was made 150 years ago:

If you find this option to be outside of your price range, you could opt for an antique version and put a toaster oven away until you need it for the days when you don't feel like starting a fire to have a frozen pizza.

Second, you must hide your dishwasher and refrigerator. Nothing is more anachronistic than a stainless fridge (or any modern appliance) in your old world kitchen. Hide appliances behind cabinet panels.

What about the flooring? Any kind of stone or wood will work well as long as it doesn't look too new. Glossy and rectified (straight edge) tile would give your space a modern feel.

What about the countertops and backsplash?

Nothing too bold or modern is the right choice for a cottagecore kitchen. Greens bring the outdoors in and gives the kitchen a more organic feel. Handmade Zellige or terracotta are good choices for a backsplash. The key is to choose finishes that will stand the test of time just like your cottage.

You may not live in The Cotswolds or a tiny village but you can create your own cottagecore aesthetic with the right cozy, timeless selections.
